"What are you doing out here? Is Dr. Thornberry in with Siren?" Phil asks as he approaches Diana in the hallway where she and Beau had talked earlier.

Diana looks up. Her face and eyes tell the story of an ugly battle. She takes a deep breath and launches herself into her husband’s arms. The sobs rack her body.

"What is it? What’s wrong? Did something happen to Siren? Is she…" he can’t finish the last question.

Diana realizes that he thinks Siren has taken a turn for the worse and shakes her head. "No, oh God no, Siren is improving. She may even be released tomorrow or at the latest the day after—they said 24 to 36 hours."

"That’s good news," he says, relief flooding his system. "So what has you so upset?"

Diana leads him to the same chairs recently vacated by her and Beau, pulling Phil into the chair beside her. "Beau stopped by earlier and Siren refuses to see him."

"That’s expected considering all that’s happened, don’t you think?"

Diana nods. "That’s not why I’m upset." She proceeds to explain about her talk with Siren and Siren’s question. "I didn’t handle it very well, I’m afraid. I’m still trying to deal with the fact that our daughter was assaulted and raped and when she asked if I would have believed her, I hesitated. Truthfully, I have no idea how I would have reacted," she confesses.

"Well, I know how I would have reacted. I’d have beat the living hell out of the asshole then buried his body in some field. I’d have believed my daughter and I know in my heart you would have, too."

"I’d like to think I would have, but things were very different back then. That was almost twenty years ago. The world was a more innocent place or so I thought," she says sadly. "What if I hadn’t believed her? What if I’d assumed a teacher would never do such an unthinkable thing? I always believed my children would come to me with their problems but I certainly never thought being sexually assaulted would be one of their problems. Oh, Phil, I’ve made such a mess of things," Diana sobs and lays her head on his shoulder.

Phillip pulls his wife into a loving embrace and kisses the top of her head, inhaling her familiar fragrance of vanilla with a touch of spice. Keeping his lips pressed against her head, he murmurs, "We would have done the best we could at the given time. We’ve always supported each other and our children. I have no doubt we would have done that same thing twenty years ago, just as we are doing now."

Diana smiles sadly and lightly nods her head. "You’re right and I can’t let Siren slip away from us now. She’s hurting and confused, but she’s still our little girl. We’ll go see her together, united as we’ve always been."
